Website maintenance
A business website maintenance checklist.
Your website does not need attention every day, but it does need an owner and a routine. Small checks prevent broken forms, security gaps, expired services, and out-of-date information from turning into avoidable emergencies.

Monthly: keep the core system healthy
- Apply platform, theme, plugin, and dependency updates after considering compatibility.
- Confirm automated backups are completing and that someone knows how restoration would work.
- Check uptime, security, and error alerts that require investigation.
- Test the primary contact, quote, booking, or purchase path as a visitor would.
- Review new administrator accounts and remove access that is no longer needed.
Quarterly: make sure the site is still useful
- Review service descriptions, key prices or claims, team details, and contact information.
- Check mobile layouts, broken links, forms, and the most important calls to action.
- Review domain registration, hosting, SSL, analytics, and other ownership records.
- Look for slow pages, outdated extensions, or integrations that are no longer needed.
- Review basic search visibility and whether important pages can still be discovered.
After any major change
Test the site whenever a platform update, hosting move, plugin installation, staff change, or third-party integration touches it. Recheck forms, email delivery, mobile layouts, site speed, and access. This is especially important for business websites that have a website form sending into a CRM or workspace email address.
Keep ownership clear
The most dangerous maintenance gap is often unclear ownership. Document the registrar, DNS, hosting, platform, backup location, analytics, payment tools, and critical contacts. Use organization-owned accounts where possible rather than a former employee’s personal login.
When a maintenance plan makes sense
Ongoing support is useful when your team does not have a technical owner, the site uses a content management system and plugins, new content or small changes happen regularly, or the website generates leads that cannot be missed. Website maintenance support provides a defined rhythm for updates, monitoring, and requests.
