Common warning signs
- Visitors are redirected to another site or see unusual pop-ups.
- A browser, search engine, host, or security tool reports a warning.
- Pages have changed without your team making the change.
- Unfamiliar administrator users, files, scheduled tasks, or plugins appear.
- The server sends unexpected email, or the host reports unusual activity.
- Search results show spam content, strange titles, or pages you did not create.
None of these symptoms proves the cause by itself. A redirect can also be a misconfiguration; a poor search snippet can be a crawl issue. But they are reasons to investigate promptly.
What not to do first
A panicked clean-up can make recovery harder. Avoid deleting files at random, installing several security plugins without a plan, or restoring an old backup without understanding how the site was compromised. You may remove evidence, reintroduce the same vulnerability, or disrupt a recoverable site.
A safer first response
- Record the warning, URL, time, and affected page with screenshots if possible.
- Contact your host if there is an active suspension or server-level alert.
- Identify the site platform, hosting provider, and whether a recent clean backup exists.
- Limit unnecessary administrator access while preserving the information needed to assess the incident.
- Ask for a recovery assessment that covers containment, cleaning, restoration, and hardening.
What a proper recovery should address
Recovery is more than removing the visible malicious code. It should account for affected files and database content, unauthorized access, vulnerable themes or plugins, stale accounts, passwords, the host environment, backups, and verification after the clean-up. The exact scope depends on the site and incident.
