Practical troubleshooting guide · The business scenario is illustrative, not a client case study. Administrative changes require authorised access.

A wellness studio in Grimsby may have a page that feels quick on office Wi-Fi but slow for someone browsing between appointments. A large opening image is one possible cause, not a diagnosis. Check the actual page before paying for a rebuild or installing another optimisation plugin.

Reproduce the customer experience

Choose the page visitors use to understand a service and get in touch. Run a mobile PageSpeed Insights test and inspect the identified Largest Contentful Paint element. Compare repeated tests and available field data rather than treating one score as a permanent fact. Note whether the enquiry link is usable while the page loads and whether third-party booking content delays the journey.

Inspect the image delivery

If the LCP element is an image, inspect its downloaded dimensions, file size and request timing. A full-resolution photograph may be much larger than its displayed size. Prepare appropriately sized responsive versions and compare visual quality before replacing the original. Preserve useful alternative text and avoid embedding text into the image when that text should remain readable HTML.

Prioritise the opening content

Do not lazy-load the main above-the-fold LCP image. Make it discoverable in the initial HTML where possible; use loading priority carefully rather than marking every image as high priority. Below-the-fold images can follow a different loading strategy. If server response time dominates, image compression alone will not solve the problem; investigate hosting, caching and backend work with the developer.

Validate a useful improvement

Retest the same page and device conditions after one controlled change. Compare the main content load, image quality and booking or contact action. Check a narrow screen for crops that hide important information. Keep the previous asset available for rollback. The goal is a faster usable page, not a perfect synthetic score purchased by removing the content customers need.

MAKE IT ACTIONABLE

Your next steps

  • Identify the actual LCP element.
  • Resize and compress only after checking the request.
  • Retest the contact journey as well as the score.
